SCHERDEL starts
production in Russia
n relation to the automotive industry,
Russia is regarded as one of Eu-
rope's most interesting markets of the
future, with an enormous potential for
growth. One of SCHERDEL's aims is
always to provide locations within easy
reach of its customers. That's why the
management decided some time ago to
set up a production plant in Kaluga,
Russia. In the meantime, the new facto-
ry has been completed and the Group
can now be regarded as a "global play-
er" in Eastern Europe as well.
SCHERDEL's internationalization strat-
egy has thus taken an important step
forward.
Kaluga is situated about 180 kilome-
tres from Moscow and has more than
300,000 inhabitants. The first company
to set up business in the region was
VW in 2007, followed by Volvo, Re-
nault, PSA and Mitsubishi soon after-
wards. This district thus became one of
Russia's most important automotive
centres. Previously, Kaluga had already
established a reputation in relation to
research and industry. The town's most
prominent citizen, Konstantin Ziolkows-
ki, is regarded as a forerunner and pio-
neer of space travel.
The reason for the new factory build-
ing was the receipt of an order for the
production of complex structures for the
rear seats and rear backrests of the
Volkswagen Polo saloon, a vehicle de-
veloped specially for the Russian mar-
ket. Thanks to the locally based pro-
duction premises, SCHERDEL can pro-
vide its customers with all the logistical
advantages. The decision to set up a
factory at Kaluga was made on the ba-
sis of a feasibility study. After the
founding of the company in May last
year, work soon started on the building
of the new production plant. The factory
was then equipped with the most mod-
ern installations in the field of bending
and welding technology. The premises
are situated on the site of the Elikor
Group, which is one of SCHERDEL's
partners and the market leader in Rus-
sia in relation to the production of
"white goods" (household equipment).
As far as production technology is con-
cerned, the Kaluga factory is complete-
ly up-to-date: the planning and man-
agement of all the operational proce-
dures is carried out using a PPS sys-
tem. The course has thus been set for
obtaining new orders in Russia.

SCHERDEL attaches great
importance to a high standard
of initial and in-service train-
ing as a basis for the transfer
of knowledge. It is all the
more encouraging when ex-
ternal institutions also appre-
ciate the particular quality of
a company's own in-house
training system. At the start of
this new training year, the lo-
cal Chamber of Industry and
Commerce awarded the title
of "Enterprise with an exem-
plary training system" to
SCHERDEL Marienberg
GmbH. The photograph
